10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

outdoor spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is not always exciting for many of us. But it is important. As the winter near an end and we start looking forward to spring and warm weather, something inside of us pushes us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and purging things we’ve hoarded over the winter months.

But who says spring cleaning is only for the interior of your house?
The outside of your house could probably use a little refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!

It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning

Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the appearance of your house in Costa Mesa, and, even more important, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save you a lot of money in years to come.

1. Gutter Cleaning

Spring is the best time to clean your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris pile up during the fall and winter months. The pollen count is at its highest during spring, making a big mess in your gutters if they are not cleaned.

Plus, bugs and critters are scavenging for places to build their homes during spring, so getting your gutters cleaned will help to prevent an infestation in your home.

Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew and stains and returning them to a like-new appearance.

2. Window Cleaning

Exterior window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows will not give you much of a headache, but any second and third floor windows will be a bit tougher to reach.

Cleaning windows by hand is a tiring chore, and will require a lot of supplies, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the best way to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.

3. Pressure Washing

You don’t want clean gutters and windows on a dirty house. Which means you are going to want to pressure wash your house too!

Pressure washing is quick, effective and affordable. You can pressure clean your house, outdoor furniture, concrete patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with not much effort. It will remove dirt and mud so they won’t permanently stain your house, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.

4. Driveway Cleaning

Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem strange since you will still be driving on it, but, a clean, cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your house.

A professional pressure washing service can do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it is concrete, asphalt, stone or some other material. Also think about adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really help it pop!

5. Patio Cleaning

Your home’s patio probably gets the most use during the summer months, so it’s easy to overlook it during the winter since you are not doing as much outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio can be in bad condition the first time you go onto it in spring.

Detergent and water – and a little muscle – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you see signs of mold or mildew, you might need to think about a more serious option, like professional power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer long.

6. Roof Cleaning

Algae and moss are common roof issues in Costa Mesa. While you’re cleaning the outside of your house, it is a great time to pressure clean your home’s roof as well, but you will have to use a different method than what you use for most of your home’s exterior.

If you start to see streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the cause. Moss is typically obvious, too. These particles can’t be scrubbed off of shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your house. Both of these methods will ruin the shingles on your home’s roof.

The best course of action for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water mixture and leave it be. This mixture will kill any organic organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.

7. Spruce up the Front

The front of your house is probably what most people see, so try to make the best impression possible for visitors and for yourself! Returning home to a clean exterior will improve your day, and will even motivate you to spend more time outdoors.

Clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and mud off of the front door, and consider painting it for a bright look! Clean unnoticed areas such as the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.

8. Organize Outdoor Tools

You will soon be spending much more time outdoors, so spring is a wonderful opportunity to organize the things you will need for outdoor chores.

Yard tools and pool care equipment need to all have an exact place outside your house – a place that it is safe from harsh weather and out of sight so it is not a constant eyesore to anyone. Taking the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the outside of your house so much more throughout the time of year when you are going to spend the most time outdoors.

9. Lawn Care & Landscaping

Your yard, trees and bushes can make a huge impact on the look of your house.

Eliminate weeds around the exterior of your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you will be planting in the future and sweep off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed poison to make lawn maintenance easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all bushes too.

10. Clean the Grill

After being unused for months, your gas or charcoal grill could need a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food particles from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.

Wipe it down to remove ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber (so you do not leave behind particles that can get into food) and a basic detergent or degreaser.

You could probably complete all of these projects over the course of a few weekends but it is going to be a lot of hard work. Instead, give us a call!
